About This Family
Distribution:
Eastern Indian and western Pacific Oceans (Japan to Australia).
Habitat:
Moderate depths on continental shelves, usually over submerged reefs or rough bottoms.
Remarks:
The name Glaucosomatidae derives from the Greek glaukos, meaning "white or bluish" and soma, meaning "body". These fishes have a white or bluish body and a dorsal fin with eight graduated spines. The lateral line is straight and extends onto the tail.
The pearl perches have a complex swim bladder/vertebral association, and along with their complex dorsal gill-arch elements, are very similar to the pempherids (sweepers). This family comprises one genus, Glaucosoma, which includes four species. All are considered excellent foodfishes.
