About This Family
Distribution:
North America, from southeastern Canada to Yucatan (Mexico), including Mississippi River drainage, Bermuda, and Cuba.
Habitat:
Freshwater, brackish water, and coastal marine
Remarks:
The topminnows and killifishes are endemic to North America and to as far south as Yucatan, stretching far out to Bermuda and Cuba. These small fishes can tolerate living in both freshwater and marine environments. Their dorsal fin has 7-16 soft rays in mid-body and anal fin has 9-15 soft rays.

They can grow to a maximum length of 30 cm.

This family comprises four genera, Adinia, Fundulus, Leptolucania, and Lucania, with about 50 species.
