About This Family
Distribution:
Marine; tropical and subtropical seas.
Habitat:
Deep water.
Remarks:
The Snake mackerels are often found in deep waters in the tropical and subtropical seas. The body is elongate and compressed; jawbone exposed; anal fin has one to three spines and 8-35 soft rays; pelvic fin with one spine and five soft rays, and finlets are isolated behind dorsal and anal fins.

The family comprise of 16 genera and 24 species.
