About This Family
Distribution:
Indo-West Pacific
Habitat:
Marine, brackish, and occasionally freshwater; most tropical and sub tropical areas.
Remarks:
With at over than 1,900 species and 210 genera, Gobiids occur in the tropical Indo-West Pacific and are especially abundant in the freshwater on oceanic islands. The Gobiidae family has more marine species than any other fish family. Their size, behavior, and habitat are quite diverse, with some species living in close association with other animals such as shrimps and sea urchins. They can spend several days out of water. Gobiids have well-developed pelvic fins which can form an adhesive disc; dorsal fin contains 2-8 flexible spines; five branchiostegals rays; circular shaped scales.

This family contains 210 genera and at least 1,950 species.
