About This Family
Distribution:
Marine; tropical and warm temperate waters.
Remarks:
The Scombridae family includes mackerels, tunas, and bonitos and is considered to be the most important and well-known food fishes. Scombrids have two dorsal fins with 5-12 finlets behind second dorsal and anal fins. The first dorsal fin is located well behind head and the pectoral fins are situated high on body. Tunas and mackerels are active epipelagic predators; they use their powerful, broad, and high tail-fin for feeding and migrating great distances. They feed on schools of small fishes, such as sardines and squids; although smaller species are plankton feeders. Their maximum length can reach 4.2 m.

The family consists of about 15 genera with 51 species.
