Distribution:
Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific
Habitat:
Marine; tropical to warm temperate seas.
Remarks:
The American round stingrays inhabit the shallow coastal waters, lagoons, and estuaries, where they often bury in the soft sediments. They are found in the tropical eastern Pacific and western Atlantic. The flattened disc is not more than 1.3 times as broad as long. The tail is slender and is about as long as disc length. Round stingrays have smooth skin on upper surface, sometimes with denticles and thorns. This family feeds on benthic invertebrates.
This family consists of two genera, Urobatis (6) and Urotrygon (10), with 16 species.
