Remarks:
Torpedo electric rays are distributed worldwide. Similar to other electric rays, they possess electric organs that stem from their head which are used as a weapon to stun prey or defend predators. These rays have a well developed caudal fin and branchial muscles, small eyes, slender jaws, and disc terminated abruptly in front. The snout is sometime reduced or absent and labial cartilages are not present.
The family consists of two subfamily, Torpendininae (torpedo electric rays) and Hypninae (coffin rays) with 22 species between them.
