About This Family
Distribution:
Western Atlantic in region of Bahamas, Florida, and Cuba; southwestern Indian off South Africa, and western Pacific from southern Australia to Japan.
Habitat:
Temperate to tropical waters; continental and insular shelves and slopes.
Remarks:
The Pristiophorids (saw sharks) occur is South Africa and Australia to Japan. They have a body similar to a shark; their snout resembles a long flat blade with unequal size teeth on each side, usually the teeth alternate from large to small and are replaceable. One pair of long barbels and large spiracles is present; dorsal fin spines and anal fin absent. Maximum size is 1.4 m.

The family is comprised of two genera with about five species.
