About This Family
Distribution:
Cold temperate to arctic marine waters of the northern hemisphere.
Habitat:
Found from the littoral to moderate depths on rocky to smooth bottoms.
Remarks:
The common name Lumpfishes relates to the globular shape of the body. Most species have a rough skin covered with tubercles, and the pelvic fins modified into a sucker. The eggs of Cyclopterus lumpus are sold as "lumpfish caviar."

There are about six genera and 28 species.
